The Whisky Trails: Trail 3
Dunnottar Castle Next trailPrevious trail

East Highlands

From Brechin to Peterhead
Introduction

From Brechin in Angus we head north through gentle hills and valleys peppered with comfortable estates and farmland. As we progress, the hills become more substantial and the rivers a little faster. Although there are still farms, fields and large houses, mountainsides become visible from farther off and mansions become castles. Stone-built villages abound, sometimes austere, sometimes flower-bedecked, always practical.

The distilleries we encounter all produce malt whisky of the Highland type.

Above: Dunnottar Castle occupies an imposing position on volcanic rocks outside Stonehaven. The morning mists clear to reveal extensive ruins, approached by a steep path
